Happy Halloween, my lovelies! Since I'm one of the few who completely biffed it on getting a Halloween costume this year (i.e. lame), I am simply wearing a pair of fake glasses and I'm rocking my costume of "Near Sighted Dawn". I wanted to be a "nerd", but I didn't have a pocket protector or super high waisted pants, etc.
Anyway, in spite of my lameness, I do love Halloween. Wait, let's make that sound a bit more fun: I LOVE Halloween! ...There that's better.
I'm going to be snuggling with PJ on the couch and watching spooky movies.
Of course I have some suggestions for those staying in this Hallow's Eve. You don't think I would forget about you, do you? Let's begin...
MOVIES THAT WILL SCARE THE PANTS OFF YOU
1. "Grave Encounters" (2011)
I rarely like found footage films. However, I guarantee this one will definitely have you sleeping with a night light. Here's a promo...
2. "Grave Encounters 2" (2012)
The sequel is just as fun as the first one, yes I know it's an indie, but like I said... it WILL scare you.
3. Unfriended (2014)
When I started this film, honestly, I was like "WTF!?!" I didn't like the format...Well, I quickly got over that. This is another indie that will suck you in. Here's the promo...
4. "An American Werewolf in London" (1981)
I'm sure some of you have seen this classic John Landis directed werewolf flick. I'm telling you, my lovelies, it stills holds up, and I understand why the makeup and special effects garnered an Oscar win. If you haven't seen it, see it. It is tongue and cheek, but there are some solid scares, and the entire cast is great.
5. "The Innkeepers" (2011)
This is a "slow burn" movie, so if you're not down with that, feel free to skip ahead. It's about two twenty-somethings working in a century-old haunted hotel, and they go looking for ghosts. Here's the trailer...
6. "Big Ass Spider" (2013)
My lovelies, I'm all about a "creature feature", and this is a fun B-movie starring an always charming Greg Grunberg (you may know him from the tv show "Alias"). It's about a lovelorn exterminator, who finally meets his match in --you guessed it--a big ass spider. It's a horror comedy, but the title probably clued you in on that fact. I loved it so much, um... I kind of wish they would make another one. Director Mike Mendez, if you're listening, MAKE ANOTHER ONE!!! Here's the trailer...
7. "Wake Wood" (2009)
I have to say if you're a parent, you may want to pass on this film. It involves the death of a child, and then...believe it or not, it gets worse. This film is pretty much a lesson on why things should stay dead a la "Pet Cemetery".
Now, that being said, I did think it was a very good horror film. Here's the trailer...
8. "Bones" (2001)
I bet you didn't think I could deliver a horror film starring Snoop Dogg and Pam Grier, but I did. It is in the B-movie category, but I found it surprisingly entertaining. Here's the trailer...
9. "The Hallow" (2015)
This is an Irish horror film that will stay with you for days. It involves a lovely family moving to a remote millhouse in Ireland. I wish things stayed quaint, but this is a horror film, so...
10. "What Lies Beneath" (2000)
This is a terrific ghost story/mystery/thriller starring Michelle Pfieffer and Harrison Ford as a married couple, whose daughter has just left for college. It's all I want to tell you, if you haven't seen it, because I thought the twist in this movie was terrific. Here's the promo...
11. "Dog Soldiers" (2002)
This is a great Neil Marshall directed movie about a group of British soldiers on a routine night time training mission, that is NOT routine at all. I've seen this movie multiple times, it's that enjoyable. Here's the trailer...
12. "Severance" (2006)
Here is a movie about a team building exercise of a different kind. A group of British sales reps get more than they bargained for when they participate in a retreat in the woods. Here's the trailer...
13. "The Mist" (2007)
This great Frank Darabont flick is based on a Stephen King story. There is an alternate ending for this film, but I recommend seeing the director's cut.
14. "The Thing" (1982)
I know there was a re-make, but just see the original. It's so, so, so good. John Carpenter and his awesome muse-back-in-the-day Kurt Russell. In fact, the entire cast is pretty terrific. Here is the trailer...
15. "28 Days Later" (2002)
Like some of the other flicks on this list, this is an old movie, but it brought in the start of the fast moving zombie. As much as I love George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", the fast moving zombie brings a new level of terror. Besides, Danny Boyle is one of my favorite directors. If you haven't seen this film, give it a chance. Here's the trailer....
THAT'S IT FOR THE HALLOWEEN RECOMMENDATIONS, MY LOVELIES. UNTIL NEXT TIME. HAPPY HALLOWEEN AND DIA DE LOS MUERTOS...
