Around these parts it's going to be as lava hot as a Hot Pocket. Due to the rising temperatures, we in the land of "Dawn Says" are having a nice "staycation".
If you're looking to "beat the heat" and save some cash, I suggest you do the same. Yes, I see your forlorn face silently asking me "Dawn, how can I have fun at home?"
Here are a few suggestions. So don't say I never gave you anything...
1. Explore a neighborhood you always wanted to see/visit.
2. Have an Iron Chef style cooking contest, using only a few ingredients, with your friends and loved ones ---yes you can still BBQ.
3. However, my personal favorite, and what we're doing around these parts: Have a 3-day weekend Film Festival. You can do it around a specific director (around these parts we're checking out some more of horror director Dario Argento's work), or you can do it around your favorite film genre.
It can be horror...
It could be comedy...
It could be romance...
It could be drama...
If you are flummoxed, I have a few suggestions for each category...
Horror
1. Dario Argento's "The Bird with the crystal Plumage" (it is the first film in his "Animal Trilogy")
2. The old 80's movie "House"
3. Another 80's horror "Hell Raiser" (trust me it is still frightening)
4. Jordan Peele's critically acclaimed "Get Out" (which I will be seeing for the first time this weekend--OMG! ...That's right, I said OMG)
5. "Oculus"
6. "It Follows" (If you haven't seen it yet, why haven't you?)
7. "Insidious"
8. "The Babadook"
Comedy
1. The old school movie "Election" (I know most of you know the director, Alex Payne, from "Sideways" and "The Descendants", but you should check out this little gem if you haven't already.)
2. "Shaun of the Dead"
3. "Hot Fuzz"
4. "Coffeetown"
5. "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"
6. "Old School"
7. "Grosse Point Blank"
8. "Friday"
Drama
1. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
2. "Memento"
3. "Donnie Darko"
4. "Drive"
5. "Nightcrawler"
6. "Black Swan"
7. "A Prophet"
Romance
1. The classic "Casablanca"
2. "Last Tango in Paris"
3. "The Princess Bride"
4. "My Best Friend's Wedding" (come on, you knew at least one Julia Roberts movie was going to make the list)
5. "Notting Hill" (okay, one more Julia Roberts movie)
6. "High Fidelity"
7. "Flirting"
And that's all folks. Dawn Says usually post Mondays and Fridays. However, Dawn Says will go dark for the Labor Day holiday. Enjoy your weekend, my lovelies...
